Esther is very eloquent for such a young girl. She speaks with confidence, belying the challenges shes had to deal with. Her father is a bricklayer, and he can barely support his wife and four daughters on his meager salary. There are months when the girls do not get to attend school because their father must choose between feeding his family and sending his daughters to school.

It is obvious as you speak with Esther that she is very bright. She loves school and enjoys reading. Her favorite color is red and her favorite food is rice. When asked what makes her happy, she quickly answers being at school. It is understandable that she is sad when she has to miss school due to her family's financial difficulties.

Esther dreams of being a teacher someday, but unfortunately, the statistics are against her. Only half of the women in Uganda are literate. Esther's situation will need to improve in order for her to get the education required for her to fulfill her dream.
