It is common in Uganda to take in the children of deceased relatives. Both Richard’s mother and father have lost family members, so they have taken in several orphaned children. Now his father cannot always provide for his own. He often has to default on Richard’s school fees in order to keep food on the table. Richard wants to stay in school so that he can study to become a doctor. It makes sense that he would want to help people after all the death and sickness he has witnessed. He admires his older brother who works to put himself through school. Richards enjoys studying and playing with his friends at school, and his favorite subject is science.
